World IVF Day

World IVF Day

World IVF Day is celebrated on July 25th of every year. It is also known as the World Embryologist Day in recognition to the incredible work of the embryologists of both past and present. World IVF Day is celebrated every year to recognize the advances made in fertility medicine since the first birth from IVF in 1978. This day raises awareness about infertility issues, celebrates success stories and emphasizes the importance of continued research and support for these on their fertility journey.

WHAT IS IVF?

IVF (In – Vitro Fertilization) is a series of procedure for couples unable to conceive naturally or those suffering from infertility. It is the most commonly used method of ART (Assisted Reproductive Techniques) and consists of collecting mature eggs released from the ovaries and fertilizing them with the sperms collected from the semen sample outside the body in the laboratory. The fertilized embryo is placed back into the uterus for implantation and once implanted, pregnancy occurs. People choose IVF in the following situations:

  • One or both blocked fallopian tubes
  • Low sperm count in male
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Uterine fibroids
  • In case of couples with genetic disorder

CELEBRATING WORLD IVF DAY: HISTORY

This day is special because on July 25th 1978, after multiple attempts and failure the first baby was successfully born through IVF. This baby was named as Louise Joy Brown. To commemorate this day, World Embryologist Day is celebrated every year on the same day.

On this day we also remember Dr Robert Edwards British physiologist and Dr Patrick Steptoe, the gynecologist and Nurse Jean Marian Purdy who were the pioneers of this IVF. In 2010, Dr Edwards received a Nobel prize for developing IVF.
