How many sperms are injected in IVF?

How Many Sperms are Injected in IVF?
  • IVF is a complex process involving fusion of egg and sperm outside the human body in the lab. Though in theory only one healthy sperm is enough to fertilize an egg but there are certain criteria for selection for selection of sperm in a man with oligospermia.

  • A minimum of 10 x 106 spermatozoa/ml of which at least 30% are motile and 15% have progressive motility are required for IVF or insemination therapy despite the fact that even lower concentration of sperms is sufficient in achieving pregnancy. Atleast 20% of spermatozoa should be of normal morphology.

  • A total motile count of over 20 million is considered normal. However, even if you have more than 20 million, it doesn’t necessarily mean that there is higher chance of pregnancy but less than 20 million significantly decreases the chance of conceiving.

  • In traditional IVF, extracted egg is kept in a petridish and concentrated sperm sample containing many sperms are placed around it and the sperms are left to fertilize the egg on their own. In contrast to this, a procedure called ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) involves selecting a high-quality sperm with good motility and injecting it directly into the egg for effective fertilization. For IVF to be successful, an adequate number of high-quality sperm need to be present to fertilize the eggs. If there are too few or poor quality sperm, it can lead to failed IVF cycles and need for repeated attempts.
