What is the Most Difficult Part of IVF?

What is the Most Difficult Part of IVF

IVF is the process where the human gametes are handled outside the human body. The eggs are retrieved from body and fused with the sperm in a petri-dish outside in the laboratory. IVF has been a blessing for couples who have not been able to conceive naturally. But this blessing takes a toll on both physical and mental health of the individual and the couple.

The process of IVF consists of many steps and each step has its own set of difficulties. But the most difficult part of IVF is the 10 – 14 days waiting period between transfer of embryo and waiting for the pregnancy test result.

In IVF, the women are given various hormonal injections to stimulate her ovaries to release more eggs instead of just one egg which is released during the normal menstrual cycle. This is continuously monitored by checking blood hormone levels and on ultrasound. These eggs are then retrieved and fused with sperm to form embryo (Fertilization). These embryos are allowed to grow in the laboratory for up to 6 days before being transferred into the womb. The embryo transfer is usually done using a thin tube called a catheter that’s passed into the vagina. The best 1 or 2 embryos will be chosen for transfer. If any suitable embryos are leftover, they may be frozen for future IVF attempts.

Once the embryos have been transferred into the womb, you’ll be advised to wait around 2 weeks before having a pregnancy test to see if the treatment has worked. These 2 weeks wait can be a very difficult period because of the anxiety of not knowing whether the treatment has worked or not. Many people find this the hardest part of the treatment process.

Every IVF cycle may not be successful by resulting in pregnancy and every positive pregnancy test may not end up in healthy live birth. In such cases the IVF procedure is repeated again for another cycle after a break of short duration.

We at Fertility Foundation/ SISU Hospital understand that fertility treatment can be a complex process and we specialize in catering to personalize the IVF cycle to every individual to secure the best results.
