AMH AND ITS ROLE IN INFERTILITY

AMH AND Its role Infertility

AMH or Anti – Mullerian Hormone is used to determine the number of oocytes or eggs present in the ovary. Testing of AMH is important in the females with infertility issue to know if there are enough eggs for an IVF or other fertility treatments.

WHAT IS AMH:
AMH is a hormone produced by the granulosa cells in the ovarian follicles. It indicates the ovarian reserve – i.e the number of eggs present in the ovary. AMH is helpful because the number of cells in the follicular reserve can be used to predict timing of menopause.

WHAT IS AMH TEST:

A women’s ovaries make thousands of eggs throughout her reproductive years. With increasing age, the number of eggs starts decreasing, especially after 30 years of age. So AMH is tested in the blood to determine the possible number of eggs left. The higher the AMH in her blood, the more eggs she will have in reserve. Lesser AMH indicates the egg reserve is also decreasing.

The AMH test can also help in the following ways:

  • When the menopause is likely to start
  • The cause for early menopause
  • In IVF to estimate a women’s remaining egg supply
  • To diagnose PCOS – one of the leading causes of female infertility
  • To help understand the sex of the baby when the genitals are not well developed.
  • In monitoring of certain types of ovarian cancer.

HOW IS THE AMH TEST DONE:

AMH testing is done through a simple blood test that can be done on any day irrespective of the menstrual cycle. Blood from vein is drawn using a thin needle and then sent to the lab for a detailed analysis.

WHEN CAN AMH TEST GIVE FALSE RESULTS:

AMH is a hormone and hormones can be influenced by many factors. Studies show that a women’s menstrual cycle and hormonal fluctuations do not affect the test result but external factors can.

  • AMH can be suppressed in case of oral contraceptive usage.
  • AMH may be less accurate in Vitamin – D deficient individuals

IS AMH TESTING NECESSARY FOR WOMEN:

AMH testing is necessary in women especially more than 30 years who are unable to get pregnant. However, despite low AMH a woman can still get pregnant because she is still producing viable eggs every cycle. It may take a little more time than expected.

AMH is helpful in extracting and freezing the eggs for future use in case of low egg reserve.
